Xmas, snow and work!

December 21st, 2009

My last blog post isnt my last before xmas, this one is, now only 3 days until the big day, still got all that wrapping up to do ….. Today it snowed, not much but enough to turn the roads around where i live into an ice rink helped along by twats who think they can drive fast in snow and ice, they will learn! From home till the Bath Road i didnt get over 20mph, im certainly not going any faster and wrecking my car, she means too much to me! So to the twats who were close behind me think about to yourself for once :@

At work all things are change again, ive had many IT meetings with XMA now and we are now going to be all AD based, no more Novell … YAY YAY YAY what brilliant news, although my boss dont think so, so we will be Server 2008, Windows 7 Pro, Citrix Thin Clients, IIS, SQL 2008 and other exciting things, plus 1500 netbooks, 150 fixed PC’s and 100 Mac’s, not too much to cope with then.

Im a tad annoyed at the moment, for the past 18 months ive developed a Staff Intranet, Student Intranet, Online Lesson Planner and iTube video player (like youtube) and one of the meetings last week was to replace the staff intranet or build around it a new one from some company called CORE, at first i was ok about it but then when i saw it it was …. Microsoft Sharepoint …………. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO …… more like microsoft failpoint, it runs like an old dog and only one user was on it! My intranet runs very fast on Apache servers and can cope with 200+ simultaneuos connections, sharepoint will probably be on its knees, so not happy about that, have aired my concerns but lets see what happens, plus they expect me to learn a new language and set of web technologies just like that, on explaining that after 8 years experience in PHP you cant go from that to Sharepoint Designer/ASPX.net overnight, its like learning French and speaking Spanish, something wont work!

More meeting scheduled for January so lets see what happens, today was good, doing staff induction for our new recruit, another member to the team who is the helpdesk operator/administrator, so spent today on the tour of the school and showing the plethora of IT systems and functions, i hope he will be okay as hes been employed on the basis i said he was the best out of the bunch and recruitable, ever wish a hole would open up?

Anyhow more blog postings after Xmas ….

Nearly Xmas and end of term …

December 10th, 2009

Again its been ages since a blog post, the reason for this being simply too busy and ive totally forgotten to write any blog posts, work has been pretty hectic and will get worse over the coming months, with less than 14 weeks to the new £27 million school everything is coming together fast, our new IT supplier has been chosen and this is XMA, we are now confident that in the new school our IT will consist of Windows 7 clients, Windows Server 2008 with HyperV technology, SQL Server 2008, Citrix Thin Clients, eDirectory/Active Directory and many more new toys, this being along with 1500 netbooks, yes one thousand five hundred of them with a team of 5, (well 6 but ill say about that next) so pretty busy times, then after this we get the new ALC built with another hundreds of PC’s and then we have the sports centre with all their PC’s, it will certainly keep the team busy and myself with all these PC’s, certainly busier than any other IT job i know!

Interviews have been taking place this week for Helpdesk Operator/Front Line Support, we had a group of 5 applicants that were singled out and it was my job to run a practical test and a communication test, one at a time, what fun! I had already decided on my two favourites, later on in the day when the interviewees had gone and i delivered my findings the decision was made on my say-so, no pressure there then, if he is useless all my fault, but i think ive made a pretty good decision in more ways than one!

Back at home the same old same old, work for the business is beginning to dry up with a few possible leads coming to fruition in 2010 but nothing of great importance, at the moment im writing my own CMS, alot of people would shout at me why re-invent the wheel? Well thats what i love doing, there is great satisfaction to be had from a blank page to a working system, so far ive only done the template and licence system and secured it all with some functions and cookies, so much more to do and dont know where to start, somehow got to work out templates and how they get included …. headache :(

This may well be my last blog post of the year, i seem to remember typing this a year ago, ive actually kept my blog running a year! It was around this time i remember some stupid bitch ploughing into the back of my new car, arghhhhhhhh, talking of which hopefully this weekend or next get my spoiler sprayed and fitted, then i need my ultra kind mate at work to speak nicely to his dad and get some more stripes added ….. im also thinking of tinting the rear windows for that ultimate sporty look, hmm have to see what Halfords have got for me.

I think that is about it, Christmas shopping almost done, need to write a list of stuff to do and this post is complete :)

Projects

November 16th, 2009

I have got some new projects up my sleeve (in case you were wondering the bell was a hoax!), one of my main projects i have started is my own CMS, every CMS lacks things and doesnt have the functionality we need, so i intend to write my own! While it will be fun to write my own it will also encourage me to learn alot more features and parts of web languages i have forgotten, obviously it will be written in the best language being PHP.

All i need now is a decent name for it, my colleague is out at lunch at the mo but on his return we intend to come up with a name for it, names for projects are a real pain as everything you think of is either cack or has been used. Anyway we’ll think of something, i will also be setting up a development blog for the new CMS so that i have a record of what is going on and followers can see how it is progressing.

The completed CMS will be used for the new school website coming in 2010 and also for myself in my own projects, also apart from the CMS i have got to expand our video streaming service to make it more like YouTube, the first version went down very well with staff and now needs more work to make it even better, there is however the issue of students accessing videos which gives me a major headache!!!

Latest Post

November 16th, 2009

Again its been ages since an updated blog post, im getting to the point where i dont have time anymore which is a shame as i like to write this every so often like a diary, ill stick with it and see how i get on.

What have i been up to since the last post? Well at work its been mainly work, work and more work, still got no-one for the helpdesk position, the interviewees i interviewed were useless at totally wrong for the job, anyway advert back in the paper so see what the next batch brings, ive also written a jQuery TV screen, this being displayed at the moment on one TFT screen and speakers in the office, when a new job is submitted somewhere in the school it will be displayed as a latest job on the screen and play a sound quite loudly to remind everyone it is there, at the moment it is basic but i intend on making sounds for different technicians and different jobs, so for urgent problems a great big stonking klaxan could sound!

It had to be jQuery as it is a fun language to use and also it needed to be ultra-dynamic, so that it knows what it has seen before and what to do if it hasnt, the code is fairly complex so i wont go into it all! Apart from this things are starting to get stressful ahead of the new school in 5 months time which im really looking forward to, if you know me well enough and are bothered as to what i do you will know what i mean by stress!

Away from work is again the same old same old, finishing a few projects off, one large website 95% completed and the rest im awaiting content from the customers along with unpaid invoices …. Arghhhhhh !

Oh here we go again, the bell has just rung ……

Sold my Dell Axim x50

October 27th, 2009

My Dell Axim x50 has gone, no more windows failboat for me, loving the iPod Touch 3G, the graphics, sound and display quality are so good, along with over 500,000 applications on the Apple App Store, most are free some you pay for though, im up to about 5 pages of apps in one month, which makes it brilliant as a PDA. Just need to get it working as a sat-nav and then be happy!

Acer Aspire One ZG5 won’t boot up

October 27th, 2009

So today after getting my acer one out for a meeting so that i could make some notes on it, found out it wasnt powering up, what a failboat of a laptop! Prior to this i changed one setting in the BIOS to stop it keep on PXE booting, that wouldnt cause any problems! I then tried all the usual battery out, power cable out, reboot etc etc but was dead, what a load of rubbish, anyway had a quick look on the net and found it is a common problem with the BIOS, so if anyone reading this or has found this with theirs follow these steps:

======================================================

Download & Extract AS1_BIOS_3309.zip (from : http://support.acer.com/…
Rename the Bios name from 3309.fd to zg5ia32.fd.
Copy zg5ia32.fd and Flashit.exe to USB flash drive.
Start the restoration process:

A. Plug the AC Adapter into the unit.
B. Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port.
C. Press and Hold down the Fn and the Esc keys together.
D. Keep these keys held down and press power.
E. When the unit’s power light comes on release the Fn and Esc keys.
F. After the keys have been released the power light will start to blink.
G. Let the unit run and after approximately 1-7 minutes, the unit should reboot.
H. Video should now be restored

New iPod Touch

September 28th, 2009

Recently I managed to “acquire” a new iPod touch 3G, all I can say is what a brilliant device, everything works out of the box, theres hundreds and thousands of apps for it on the Apple App Store, some free and some payable, but all in all im really pleased with it, the touch screen making it even better.

The ipod touch is really a music player but I intend to use it and I am using it as a PDA, calendar, email, web, documents, games, everything is there and works. My last PDA was a Dell Axim x50 which was fine, but it ran Windows Mobile Failboat edition which decided to run very very slowly and crash with even the simple tasks, so that’s now on eBay and replaced with an Apple version.

So far I have got 4 pages of apps, games, utilities and so on, my favourite being smacktalk, thanks Chris for the recommendation!

Aston Martin for my birthday!

September 28th, 2009

Nearly a month ago it was my birthday, yay! One of the best presents I got was an “Aston Martin thrill”, when I first opened the giftbox I just thought it was a trip around the circuit sat in the passenger seat, I would have been happy with it but then I found out I was actually going to drive it! I was going to drive an Aston Martin Vantage! That’s when the shock set in, ive always loved cars and speed which goes with the love of aircraft, but the thought of me behind the wheel of a £150,000 car did scare me a bit.

Anyway had to wait until the end of the week for the day to arrive, up early at 5.30am and headed off to Silverstone, on arrival you had to check in and all the usual bumph, but for once luck was on my side and I was last to go, there were about 8 of us there that day and I was the last two which I thought was better as it wasn’t over too quick, you had to wait and watch others.

We had a briefing before going out and this just showed you how to drive on the race track and so on, the more nervous I was getting! Then came the time for me to get in, the car funnily enough had 007 on the side, James Bond!

There was an instructor beside you and he dealt with the mirrors and told you what to do, the rest was down to you! When I got in he immediately said to me I looked nervous, my face must say a thousand words. Driving was fantastic, the car accelerated so quickly but wasn’t aggressive like some cars are, the top speed I reached was 150mph, the car could of gone a lot faster but there purely wasn’t enough track, the sound and feel of the car was beautiful, a truly unforgettable day!

I was surprised at how stiff the clutch was, throughout the drive I remained in 3rd and 4th gear which I was glaad about as changing often might have been a problem, also the steering and control was superb, going round sharp corners at 70mph was no problem, in my car would spell disaster.

Wordpress on ipod touch

September 23rd, 2009

This is my first blog post using the Wordpress app for Apple iPod touch, no longer need to go near the website to add a blog post, this may mean more posts more often!

At the moment I’m writing this whilst sat in a maths classroom installing some smartboard software, or rather waiting for it to install on these dinosaur PC’s

Back to normal…

September 1st, 2009

All back to normal today, all staff are in with forgotten passwords, missing ID cards and flooding the web services, all just another day working in IT at a secondary school.

I cannot believe 5/6 weeks has passed so quick, my job list is 1/3 complete, now its countdown to the fabulous new school building in 6 months, im sure there will be lots for me to do, including version 3 of my Staff Intranet which my boss wants full 100% LDAP integration….
